Tango with El Polaco

Stefan El Polaco & Sandra Buratti dancing in Thalia Theatre, New York. In the background on the piano, the unforgettable Octavio Brunetti (R.I.P.).

In their handful of dance numbers, Laurence Martin and Stefan Zawistowski struck just the right balance between terpsichorean expression and enhancing rather than detracting from the songs.

Bio Note

Stefan (“El Polaco”) Zawistowski has danced the Argentine tango since 1997. At the turn of the century, he studied for twelve months in Buenos Aires with tango masters: Osvaldo Zotto (R.I.P.), Carlos Gavito (R.I.P.), Gustavo Naveira, Nito y Elba, Eduardo Arquimbau, Guillermina Quiroga, Sebastian Arce y Mariana Montes, Chicho, Nancy y Damian, Junior Cervilla, Olga Besio, et al. While in Buenos Aires, he performed with a dance group formed by Olga Besio at “La Galeria de Tango.”

He appeared three years in a row in the “Ferias de Las Americas” festival sponsored by the Argentinean Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Accompanied by Annatina Luck, El Polaco danced with the famous—Oscar-winning—Bajofondo tango techno band at their only appearance in N.Y.C.

He performed with the world-renowned Italian concert pianist Cristiana Pegoraro, as well as with the master bandoneon player Raul Jaurena, performing Piazzolla arrangements in “A Taste of Tango” show in Evansville, Indiana, in “Tango a Living Story” at the United Nations or in 40+ performances of “Tango: The Four Seasons” at the Thalia Theatre in Queens, New York.

His other significant tango performances include a three-night appearance on the stage of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra—in front of the 2,500 strong audience—together with the A.S.O. (see video clip) and acclaimed artists (Rosa Colantes, dancer—R.I.P.—and the Grammy Award-winning musicians – Luciana Souza voice, Scott Tennet guitar), as part of a ten-day Latin-American music and dance festival “¡Musica Ardiente!” including the cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Stefan El Polaco lives, teaches, and performs tango in New York City. He can be frequently seen at the local milongas.
